Audit Director

Position Overview


We seek an accomplished Audit Director to provide strategic leadership to our clients nonprofit practice. This senior leadership position will drive quality, growth, and innovation in our nonprofit audit services while developing client relationships and mentoring engagement teams.



Key Responsibilities



Practice Leadership

  • Direct the firm's nonprofit audit practice, including strategic planning and practice development
  • Drive quality control initiatives and maintain the highest standards of professional excellence
  • Develop and implement best practices for nonprofit engagements
  • Lead proposals and presentations for prospective nonprofit clients
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key nonprofit organizations and industry groups
  • Represent the firm at industry conferences and professional events


Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the firm's technical authority on nonprofit accounting and auditing matters
  • Monitor and interpret new accounting standards and regulatory requirements affecting nonprofits
  • Develop firm positions on complex accounting and auditing issues
  • Lead the implementation of new audit methodologies and technologies
  • Oversee quality control reviews of nonprofit engagement deliverables
  • Provide consultation on complex technical matters to engagement teams


Client Service & Business Development

  • Oversee multiple large, complex nonprofit audit engagements
  • Build and maintain relationships with C-level executives and board members
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities within the nonprofit sector
  • Lead proposal efforts and negotiate engagement terms
  • Present to boards and audit committees
  • Develop value-added services for nonprofit clients


Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop managers and senior staff
  • Drive recruitment efforts for the nonprofit practice
  • Design and deliver technical training programs
  • Conduct performance evaluations for managers
  • Foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
  • Develop future firm leaders


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (Master's preferred)
  • Active CPA license
  • 12+ years of public accounting experience with significant nonprofit focus
  • Comprehensive knowledge of:
    • GAAP and GAAS
    • Yellow Book requirements
    • Uniform Guidance and Single Audits
    • Form 990 reporting
    • Nonprofit-specific regulations and requirements


Technical Expertise

  • Expert knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles including:
    • Complex fund accounting
    • Endowment management and UPMIFA
    • Split-interest agreements
    • Complex revenue recognition
    • Program-related investments
    • Alternative investments
    • Complex grants management


Leadership Competencies

  • Proven ability to lead and grow a practice area
  • Strong business development track record
  • Excellence in client relationship management
  • Demonstrated success in staff development
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Accounting or MBA
  • Additional certifications (CGMA, CGFM)
  • Experience serving on nonprofit boards
  • Published articles or speaking engagements in nonprofit sector
  • Leadership roles in professional associations
  • Experience with practice management software
  • Knowledge of data analytics and emerging technologies
