Position Overview


The Senior Tax Accountant serves as a critical member of our clients tax team, responsible for preparing and managing complex tax returns including individual (Form 1040), C-Corporation (Form 1120), S-Corporation (Form 1120S), Partnership (Form 1065), Trust/Estate (Form 1041), and Gift Tax (Form 709) returns. This role requires technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to ensure accurate and timely completion of client tax obligations. The Senior Tax Accountant maintains responsibility for assigned tax returns from initial preparation through final partner review.



Primary Responsibilities



Tax Preparation and Compliance

  • Prepare complex federal and state tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts, and estates with minimal supervision
  • Identify, research, and resolve technical tax issues using resources such as CCH, BNA, and RIA
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and current tax regulations to ensure accurate filing
  • Conduct thorough reviews of client-provided financial information and make appropriate accounting adjustments
  • Perform comprehensive quality reviews of tax returns prepared by staff accountants
  • Identify tax planning opportunities and potential areas of concern for clients
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory tax developments that may affect clients
  • Ensure compliance with filing deadlines and extension requirements


Client Interaction and Service

  • Communicate directly with clients to gather necessary documentation and information
  • Respond promptly to client inquiries regarding tax matters
  • Explain complex tax concepts to clients in clear, understandable terms
  • Participate in client meetings to discuss tax strategies and compliance requirements
  • Maintain strong professional relationships with clients through consistent, high-quality service
  • Provide proactive tax planning advice and consultation services
  • Document client interactions according to firm standards


Team Leadership and Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and train junior tax staff
  • Delegate and review work performed by staff accountants
  • Provide constructive feedback to improve team performance
  • Assist in developing training materials and programs for tax staff
  • Foster a collaborative team environment that promotes knowledge sharing


Practice Management

  • Work closely with partners on engagement planning, execution, and review
  • Maintain accurate time records and assist with client billing
  • Adhere to firm policies, procedures, and workflow methodologies
  • Contribute to the improvement of firm processes and efficiency
  • Participate in firm committees and initiatives as assigned
  • Assist with business development activities and proposal preparation
  • Identify opportunities to expand services to existing clients


Technical Skills and Knowledge Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of federal and state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements
  • Expert proficiency in navigating and utilizing tax research platforms including CCH, BNA, and RIA
  • Advanced knowledge of tax preparation software systems
  • Strong proficiency with paperless tax workflow systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a digital tax environment
  • Expert-level skills in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word for professional correspondence and documentation
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks and other accounting software programs
  • Understanding of integrated tax and accounting workflows
  • Ability to analyze financial statements and identify tax implications


Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree in Taxation or Accounting preferred
  • CPA certification preferred; candidates actively pursuing CPA licensure will be considered
  • 5-8 years of progressive tax preparation experience in a public accounting environment, preferably in a small to medium-sized firm
  • Demonstrated experience with complex tax returns across multiple entity types
  • Thorough understanding of AICPA Code of Professional Conduct and ethical standards
  • Commitment to continuing professional education and development
