Our clients boutique but growing CPA firm, located in Wallingford, Connecticut, specializes in providing comprehensive tax, accounting, and advisory services to small and medium-sized businesses throughout Connecticut. Their personalized approach and commitment to excellence have made them a trusted advisor to business owners throughout New Haven County and beyond. They are currently seeking an experienced, CPA-licensed Tax Manager to join their collaborative team in either the Wallingford or Sandy Hook office.

This position is partnership tracked for the successful candidate.



Position Overview


As a Tax Manager, you will serve as a key advisor to our diverse small and medium-sized business clients while leading our tax team in delivering exceptional service. This role combines technical tax expertise with client relationship management and staff development responsibilities. The ideal candidate will bring a broad range of experience working with various entity types and industries, allowing them to provide comprehensive tax solutions tailored to each client's unique situation and goals.



Key Responsibilities



Client Service & Tax Advisory

  • Serve as the primary tax advisor for a portfolio of small and medium-sized business clients across multiple industries
  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies that align with clients' business objectives and minimize tax liabilities
  • Identify opportunities for tax savings and consult with clients on strategic decisions with tax implications
  • Review complex federal, state, and local tax returns for various entity types (S-Corps, C-Corps, Partnerships, LLCs, individuals)
  • Research and resolve complex tax issues, prepare technical memoranda, and communicate findings to clients
  • Keep clients informed of relevant tax law changes and their potential impact
  • Represent clients before tax authorities when needed


Practice & Team Leadership

  • Manage and mentor tax staff, including seniors, associates, and seasonal professionals
  • Oversee tax engagements from planning through completion, ensuring quality control and timely delivery
  • Review staff work for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to professional standards
  • Provide performance feedback and contribute to staff evaluations
  • Develop and deliver internal training on tax topics
  • Collaborate with partners on practice development initiatives and workflow management
  • Manage engagement economics including budgeting, billing, and realization


Business Development

  • Cultivate and expand relationships with existing clients
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities for additional firm services
  • Participate in networking events and community activities
  • Contribute to proposal development and client presentations
  • Enhance the firm's reputation through thought leadership and industry involvement


Qualifications



Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • Active CPA license in Connecticut (or ability to obtain through reciprocity)
  • 7+ years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, with at least 2 years at the senior or supervisor level
  • Demonstrated experience serving small to medium-sized businesses across various industries
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements
  • Experience with various entity structures including S-Corps, C-Corps, Partnerships, and LLCs
  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective client interaction
  • Team leadership experience with proven ability to develop staff
  • Proficiency with tax preparation software (UltraTax, CCH Axcess, or similar)
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Office applications


Preferred

  • Master's degree in Taxation or Accounting
  • Experience with Connecticut-specific tax matters
  • Specialized industry knowledge in one or more of our core client sectors
  • Prior experience in a regional or local CPA firm serving similar client base
  • Experience with QuickBooks and other accounting software commonly used by SMBs
  • Demonstrated client development success
