We are seeking an experienced, CPA-licensed Tax Manager to lead the growing tax practice and drive client success.
Position Overview
The Tax Manager will play a pivotal role in delivering strategic tax solutions to our clients while leading and developing our tax team. This position requires a dynamic professional who can balance technical excellence, client relationship management, and team leadership. The ideal candidate will bring deep tax expertise, a client-first approach, and the ability to mentor and develop junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Strategy & Compliance
- Develop and implement comprehensive tax strategies for clients across various industries and entity types
- Prepare and review complex federal, state, and local tax returns for corporations, partnerships, LLCs, and high-net-worth individuals
- Conduct in-depth tax research to address complex tax issues and identify planning opportunities
- Provide expert tax consulting on business transactions, restructuring, and strategic planning
- Manage multi-state and international tax compliance for clients with complex tax profiles
- Develop and maintain tax provision analyses and support for financial statement reporting
- Stay current with changing tax laws and regulations, particularly those impacting the D.C. metropolitan area
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise and mentor tax associates and seniors, providing technical guidance and professional development
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback
- Train staff on technical tax topics, emerging tax regulations, and best practices
- Assign and manage workload for tax team members
- Contribute to recruiting and professional development initiatives
- Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary point of contact for key client relationships
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships through exceptional service and proactive communication
- Conduct client meetings to discuss tax planning, compliance, and strategic business matters
- Identify and pursue cross-selling opportunities
- Represent the firm at networking events and professional associations
- Contribute to business development efforts
Practice Management
- Manage engagement profitability and efficiency
- Ensure timely completion of tax engagements within budget
- Implement quality control procedures for tax practice
- Contribute to firm strategic planning and practice growth initiatives
- Assist in developing pricing strategies and engagement approaches
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
- Active CPA license in Virginia (or ability to obtain through reciprocity)
- 7-10 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting
- Extensive experience with corporate, partnership, and individual taxation
- Strong technical knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws
- Proven experience managing and developing tax staff
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Proficiency with tax preparation software (e.g., UltraTax, CCH Axcess)
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred
- Master's degree in Taxation
- Experience with government contractors, nonprofit organizations, or professional services firms
- Knowledge of international tax considerations
- Experience with tax provision and accounting for income taxes
- Advanced QuickBooks skills
- Prior experience in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area
