Position Overview


Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join their established CPA firm in Bethesda, Maryland. This role offers the opportunity to work with a diverse client base while taking on significant responsibility in audit, tax, and advisory services. The ideal candidate will demonstrate technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a commitment to delivering exceptional client service.



Key Responsibilities



Audit & Assurance Services

  • Lead audit engagements for small to mid-size clients across various industries including non-profits, professional services, healthcare, and manufacturing
  • Prepare comprehensive audit risk assessments, materiality calculations, and audit planning documentation
  • Conduct detailed testing of financial statement accounts including cash, accounts receivable, inventory, fixed assets, debt, and equity
  • Perform analytical procedures, substantive testing, and controls testing in accordance with GAAS
  • Prepare and review audit workpapers, ensuring compliance with firm quality control standards
  • Draft audit reports, management letters, and internal control recommendations
  • Supervise and review work performed by staff accountants and interns


Tax Services

  • Prepare complex federal and state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, S-corporations, and C-corporations
  • Conduct tax research on complex issues and document findings in technical memoranda
  • Perform tax planning and projection services for high-net-worth individuals and business clients
  • Review tax returns prepared by junior staff, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Assist with IRS and state tax examinations, including preparation of responses to tax notices
  • Stay current on tax law changes and communicate updates to clients and team members


Financial Statement Preparation & Reviews

  • Prepare compiled and reviewed financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Perform review procedures including analytical procedures and inquiries of management
  • Draft footnote disclosures for complex accounting issues
  • Assist clients with monthly and quarterly financial statement preparation
  • Provide guidance on accounting treatment for unusual transactions


Client Advisory & Business Development

  • Serve as primary contact for assigned clients, building strong relationships and understanding their business needs
  • Provide business advisory services including budgeting, forecasting, and operational improvements
  • Identify opportunities for additional services and collaborate with partners on business development
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and proposal development
  • Attend networking events and industry conferences to build professional relationships


Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentor and train junior staff on technical accounting and auditing procedures
  • Delegate work assignments based on staff capabilities and engagement requirements
  • Provide constructive feedback and performance evaluations for team members
  • Lead engagement teams and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Foster a collaborative work environment that promotes professional growth


Required Qualifications



Education & Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in Maryland or ability to obtain within 12 months
  • Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred


Experience

  • Minimum 4-6 years of public accounting experience with a CPA firm
  • Demonstrated experience in audit, tax, and financial statement preparation
  • Experience supervising and training junior staff
  • Knowledge of various industries and business structures


Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in audit software (CCH Engagement, CaseWare, or similar)
  • Advanced knowledge of tax preparation software (CCH Axcess, ProSystem fx, or Lacerte)
  • Expert-level Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data analysis
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, Sage, and other accounting software platforms
  • Understanding of GAAP, GAAS, and tax regulations
