Staff Tax Accountant - Corp Tax

Position Overview
Our clients established Manhattan-based CPA firm is seeking an experienced Staff Tax Accountant with specialized expertise in C-Corporation tax compliance and planning. This role focuses on preparing complex corporate tax returns while supporting their growing portfolio of corporate clients across various industries. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in federal and state corporate taxation, with particular emphasis on Form 1120 preparation and related compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate Tax Compliance
- Prepare and review federal Form 1120 corporate income tax returns for clients ranging from small businesses to mid-market corporations
- Handle multi-state corporate tax filings, including state income tax returns, franchise tax returns, and various state compliance requirements
- Calculate and prepare corporate tax provisions under ASC 740 for financial reporting purposes
- Process corporate estimated tax payments and ensure compliance with safe harbor requirements
- Prepare corporate tax extensions and manage filing deadlines across multiple jurisdictions
Technical Analysis & Research
- Analyze complex corporate transactions including mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, and asset dispositions
- Research federal and state tax law changes affecting corporate clients using professional tax databases
- Review and reconcile book-to-tax differences, including temporary and permanent adjustments
- Assist with tax planning strategies related to corporate structure optimization and tax minimization
- Support corporate clients with nexus determinations and apportionment calculations
Client Service & Communication
- Maintain direct communication with corporate clients regarding tax matters, deadlines, and compliance requirements
- Prepare clear and concise tax memos explaining complex issues and recommendations to clients
- Coordinate with clients' accounting departments and external auditors to gather necessary documentation
- Respond to IRS and state tax notices, correspondence, and examination requests
- Assist clients with quarterly tax planning and cash flow projections
Documentation & Quality Control
- Maintain detailed and organized tax workpapers supporting all tax return positions and calculations
- Ensure all corporate tax returns are prepared in accordance with professional standards and firm policies
- Review supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness before finalizing tax returns
- Utilize firm's tax software and document management systems efficiently
- Participate in internal quality control reviews and implement feedback
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3-5 years of experience in corporate tax preparation, preferably in public accounting
- Extensive hands-on experience with Form 1120 preparation and related schedules
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal and multi-state corporate tax compliance
Technical Expertise
- Advanced proficiency in corporate tax software (CCH ProSystem fx, Lacerte, or UltraTax preferred)
- Strong understanding of federal corporate tax code, regulations, and compliance requirements
- Experience with multi-state tax issues, including apportionment, nexus, and state-specific requirements
- Knowledge of ASC 740 tax provision calculations and financial statement impact
- Proficiency with tax research tools (CCH, BNA, Checkpoint, etc.)
Professional Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple corporate clients and meet tight deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for complex calculations
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA license or actively pursuing CPA certification
- Experience with New York State and New York City corporate tax requirements
- Knowledge of consolidated return regulations and intercompany transactions
- Familiarity with corporate alternative minimum tax and other penalty calculations
- Experience with corporate restructuring and transaction tax issues
- Previous experience in Manhattan or New York metropolitan area
