Position Overview


Our clients established Worcester-based CPA firm is seeking an experienced CPA licensed Tax Manager to lead their expanding tax practice. This key leadership role combines advanced technical expertise with substantial management responsibilities, requiring an individual who can oversee complex tax engagements while developing talent and driving business growth. The successful candidate will manage a diverse portfolio of clients, lead a team of tax professionals, and contribute to the strategic direction of our tax practice.



Key Responsibilities



Tax Practice Leadership & Management

  • Oversee all aspects of tax service delivery for assigned client portfolio, ensuring quality, timeliness, and profitability
  • Manage and coordinate tax engagements across multiple entity types including corporations, partnerships, LLCs, trusts, estates, and high-net-worth individuals
  • Lead tax planning initiatives and strategic consulting engagements for key clients
  • Develop and implement tax department policies, procedures, and quality control standards
  • Coordinate with audit and advisory service lines to provide integrated client solutions


Client Relationship Management & Business Development

  • Serve as primary relationship manager for the firm's most complex and valuable tax clients
  • Develop and maintain long-term client relationships through exceptional service delivery and proactive communication
  • Identify opportunities for additional services and lead cross-selling initiatives with other practice areas
  • Participate in proposal development and client presentations for new business opportunities
  • Represent the firm at professional events, conferences, and community organizations to enhance visibility


Team Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise and mentor senior tax accountants, staff accountants, and tax preparers
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide professional development guidance, and create career advancement opportunities
  • Lead recruitment efforts for tax department hiring and participate in campus recruiting initiatives
  • Design and deliver internal training programs on technical tax topics and professional development
  • Foster a collaborative team culture focused on excellence, continuous learning, and client service


Technical Excellence & Compliance Oversight

  • Handle the most complex tax matters including multi-state compliance, corporate reorganizations, and sophisticated planning strategies
  • Provide technical guidance and research support on complex tax issues for the entire tax team
  • Review and approve all significant tax positions and planning recommendations
  • Ensure compliance with professional standards, firm policies, and regulatory requirements
  • Stay current with federal and state tax law changes and communicate updates to team and clients


Strategic Planning & Practice Development

  • Contribute to the strategic planning and growth initiatives for the tax practice
  • Analyze practice metrics including realization, utilization, and profitability to identify improvement opportunities
  • Develop specialized service offerings and niche expertise areas to differentiate the firm
  • Participate in partner meetings and contribute to firm-wide strategic initiatives
  • Support technology implementations and process improvements within the tax department


Required Qualifications



Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA license in Massachusetts (active and in good standing)
  • Master's degree in Taxation, MBA, or related advanced degree strongly preferred


Professional Experience

  • Minimum 6 -10 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting
  • At least 3-5 years of management or supervisory experience leading tax professionals
  • Extensive experience with complex tax compliance across all major entity types
  • Demonstrated success in client relationship management and business development
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent engagements and meeting critical deadlines


Technical Expertise

  • Expert-level knowledge of federal tax code, regulations, and Massachusetts tax law
  • Advanced proficiency in professional tax software platforms (CCH ProSystem fx preferred)
  • Extensive experience with tax research databases and technical writing capabilities
  • Strong understanding of ASC 740 tax provisions and financial statement integration
  • Knowledge of estate and gift tax planning, business succession planning, and international tax basics


Leadership & Management Competencies

  • Proven track record of successfully managing and developing tax professionals
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with ability to influence at all organizational levels
  • Strong business acumen with understanding of practice economics and profitability drivers
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain client relationships resulting in revenue growth
  • Experience with performance management, coaching, and professional development of staff


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as Tax Manager in regional or national CPA firm
  • Specialized expertise in areas such as state and local tax (SALT), international tax, or industry-specific tax issues
  • Experience with Massachusetts tax incentives, credits, and economic development programs
  • Knowledge of tax issues affecting key Central Massachusetts industries (healthcare, manufacturing, technology, education)
  • Professional credentials such as CPA/PFS (Personal Financial Specialist) or other advanced certifications
  • Active participation in professional organizations (MACPA, AICPA, local business groups)


Working Environment
