Our clients well-established CPA firm in Great Falls, Virginia, is seeking an experienced CPA licensed Senior Tax Manager to lead their tax practice and drive strategic growth. Position Overview: The Senior Tax Manager will oversee complex tax engagements, manage client relationships, and supervise tax staff while contributing to firm leadership and business development initiatives. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and the ability to handle sophisticated tax matters for high-net-worth individuals, businesses, and entities.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Practice Leadership:
- Lead and manage the firm's tax practice, ensuring quality service delivery and compliance with all professional standards
- Oversee preparation and review of complex federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts, and estates
- Handle sophisticated tax planning strategies including entity selection, succession planning, and wealth transfer techniques
- Manage multi-state tax compliance issues and coordinate with various state jurisdictions
- Develop and implement tax strategies for mergers, acquisitions, and business restructuring transactions
Client Management:
- Serve as primary tax advisor for the firm's most significant clients, including high-net-worth individuals and successful business owners
- Build and maintain strong relationships with existing clients while identifying opportunities for service expansion
- Conduct tax planning meetings and present complex strategies to clients and their advisory teams
- Coordinate with attorneys, financial planners, and investment advisors on integrated planning initiatives
- Respond to IRS and state tax authority inquiries, notices, and examination requests
Team Leadership & Development:
- Supervise and mentor tax managers, seniors, and staff members, providing technical guidance and professional development
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to promote career growth
- Lead tax department meetings and training sessions on technical updates and best practices
- Delegate assignments effectively while ensuring quality control and timely completion
- Foster a collaborative environment that encourages professional growth and knowledge sharing
Business Development:
- Actively participate in firm marketing and business development activities
- Network with professional referral sources including attorneys, financial advisors, and business consultants
- Represent the firm at professional organizations and community events
- Assist in proposal preparation for new client opportunities
- Contribute to thought leadership through speaking engagements and article writing
Technical Expertise & Compliance:
- Stay current with federal, state, and local tax law changes and their impact on clients
- Research complex tax issues and provide authoritative guidance to staff and clients
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, independence requirements, and firm quality control procedures
- Participate in continuing professional education and maintain all licensing requirements
- Contribute to the development of firm tax policies and procedures
Administrative Leadership:
- Assist with strategic planning for the tax department and firm overall
- Participate in firm management meetings and contribute to operational decisions
- Help establish billing rates, fee arrangements, and engagement profitability targets
- Support the recruitment and hiring of qualified tax professionals
- Assist with annual peer review preparation and quality assurance initiatives
Required Qualifications:
- CPA license in Virginia (or ability to obtain through reciprocity)
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field
- Minimum 8-10 years of progressive public accounting experience with significant tax focus
- Minimum 3-5 years of supervisory and client management experience
- Advanced knowledge of federal income tax regulations and compliance requirements
- Experience with multi-state taxation and complex entity structures
- Proficiency with professional tax software (preferably CCH ProSystem fx or similar)
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven leadership and team management capabilities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Taxation (MST) or related advanced degree
- Enrolled Agent (EA) designation or willingness to obtain
- Experience with high-net-worth individual taxation and estate planning
- Knowledge of international taxation and foreign reporting requirements
- Experience with tax controversy and IRS representation
- Previous experience in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan market
- Established professional network and referral relationships
