Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced, CPA-licensed Senior Tax Associate to join their growing tax practice specializing in ultra-high net worth (UHNW) and high net worth (HNW) client services. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing complex tax matters for affluent individuals, families, and their related entities, while maintaining the highest standards of client service and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Compliance
- Prepare and review complex individual, trust, estate, partnership, and corporate tax returns for UHNW/HNW clients
- Manage multi-state tax compliance requirements and coordinate filings across various jurisdictions
- Handle sophisticated tax structures including family limited partnerships, LLCs, S-corporations, and private foundations
- Oversee estimated tax payment calculations and tax planning strategies
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations
Client Management & Advisory Services
- Serve as primary point of contact for assigned portfolio of UHNW/HNW clients
- Provide proactive tax planning advice and strategies to minimize tax liabilities
- Collaborate with clients' other professional advisors including estate planning attorneys, wealth managers, and family office personnel
- Conduct client meetings and present complex tax concepts in an understandable manner
- Respond to client inquiries and IRS/state tax notices in a timely and professional manner
Technical Expertise & Research
- Research complex tax issues and provide technical guidance on advanced tax matters
- Stay current with federal and state tax law changes affecting high net worth individuals
- Analyze and implement tax-efficient strategies for business transactions, real estate investments, and succession planning
- Review and prepare documentation for gift and estate tax filings
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise and mentor junior tax staff and seasonal preparers
- Review work product to ensure accuracy and compliance with firm standards
- Participate in training programs and knowledge sharing initiatives
- Assist with business development activities and client retention efforts
Required Qualifications
Education & Licensing
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Active CPA license in New Jersey (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
- Master's degree in Taxation preferred
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of public accounting experience with focus on individual and entity tax services
- Demonstrated experience working with UHNW/HNW clients (net worth $5M+)
- Experience with complex tax structures, multi-state filings, and sophisticated tax planning strategies
- Previous experience in a CPA firm environment preferred
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in professional tax software (CCH Axcess, Lacerte, ProSeries, or similar)
- Advanced knowledge of federal and state tax codes
- Experience with trust and estate taxation
- Strong Excel skills and financial modeling capabilities
- Familiarity with entity taxation and multi-tiered partnership structures
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with international tax matters and foreign reporting requirements (FBAR, FATCA, Form 8938)
- Knowledge of New York and Connecticut state tax laws
- Previous experience with private equity, hedge funds, or real estate investment structures
- Enrolled Agent (EA) designation or willingness to obtain
- Experience with tax provision work and financial statement preparation
