Position Summary
We are seeking an accomplished Tax Partner with an active CPA license to lead our tax practice and contribute to the strategic direction of the firm. This senior leadership role requires exceptional technical expertise, proven business development capabilities, and the ability to manage complex client relationships while overseeing tax operations across both office locations. The successful candidate will have equity participation opportunities and direct involvement in firm governance.
Key Responsibilities
Practice Leadership & Strategic Direction
- Lead and direct the firm's tax practice across both Cranford and Manhattan offices
- Develop and execute strategic initiatives to grow the tax practice and expand service offerings
- Participate in firm-wide strategic planning, budgeting, and operational decision-making
- Oversee tax department profitability, resource allocation, and performance metrics
- Establish and maintain technical standards and quality control procedures
- Stay current with tax legislation and communicate impacts to clients and staff
Client Relationship Management & Advisory Services
- Manage portfolio of the firm's most significant and complex tax clients
- Serve as trusted advisor to ultra-high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and sophisticated business entities
- Provide advanced tax planning strategies including estate planning, succession planning, and wealth transfer techniques
- Handle complex multi-jurisdictional tax matters and international tax compliance
- Lead client presentations, proposal processes, and fee negotiations
- Resolve complex tax controversies and represent clients in high-stakes IRS examinations
Business Development & Market Expansion
- Drive new business development through strategic networking, referral relationships, and market presence
- Cultivate relationships with attorneys, financial advisors, investment bankers, and other professional service providers
- Participate in speaking engagements, industry conferences, and thought leadership initiatives
- Mentor and support team members in their business development efforts
- Identify and pursue strategic acquisition opportunities and practice expansion
Team Leadership & Professional Development
- Recruit, develop, and retain top-tier tax professionals
- Provide mentorship and career guidance to managers and senior staff
- Lead technical training programs and professional development initiatives
- Participate in performance evaluations and compensation decisions
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture aligned with firm values
- Oversee succession planning for key client relationships and technical expertise
Firm Management & Operations
- Serve on firm executive committee and participate in governance decisions
- Contribute to firm policies, procedures, and strategic initiatives
- Oversee risk management and quality control within the tax practice
- Manage practice economics including billing, collections, and profitability analysis
- Represent the firm in professional organizations and industry associations
- Support firm-wide technology initiatives and process improvement efforts
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master's degree in Taxation preferred
- Active CPA license in New Jersey and New York (or ability to obtain promptly)
- Minimum 12-15 years of progressive public accounting experience with significant tax focus
- Demonstrated partnership-level experience or clear readiness for partnership responsibilities
Technical Expertise
- Expert-level knowledge of federal, state, and local tax regulations and compliance
- Advanced expertise in complex individual, partnership, corporate, and fiduciary taxation
- Deep understanding of estate and gift tax planning, trust taxation, and wealth transfer strategies
- Experience with international tax matters, multi-state issues, and tax controversy resolution
- Proficiency with advanced tax software, research tools, and technology platforms
Leadership & Business Skills
- Proven track record of business development and client relationship management
- Strong leadership capabilities with experience managing and developing professional teams
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
- Demonstrated ability to drive practice growth and profitability
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities at the executive level
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Taxation (LLM or MST)
- Enrolled Agent (EA) or other specialized tax certifications
- Experience serving ultra-high-net-worth clients and family offices
- Background in mergers & acquisitions, private equity, or complex business transactions
- Published articles, speaking experience, or recognized thought leadership in taxation
- Previous partnership experience at a reputable CPA firm
- Established network of professional relationships and referral sources
