Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to join their growing Manhattan-based CPA firm. The successful candidate will oversee tax compliance and planning services for a diverse portfolio of individual, corporate, and partnership clients while managing a team of tax professionals. This role offers the opportunity to work with sophisticated tax matters in one of the world's leading financial centers.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Preparation
- Oversee preparation and review of complex federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, LLCs, trusts, and estates
- Ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations across multiple jurisdictions
- Manage tax provision calculations and quarterly estimated payment strategies
- Review work performed by senior associates and staff accountants
Client Management
- Serve as primary contact for assigned client portfolio, building and maintaining strong professional relationships
- Conduct client meetings to discuss tax strategies, planning opportunities, and compliance requirements
- Communicate complex tax concepts clearly to clients with varying levels of financial sophistication
- Coordinate with other service lines within the firm to provide comprehensive client solutions
Tax Planning & Advisory
- Develop and implement tax-efficient strategies for business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and reorganizations
- Provide guidance on entity structure optimization and succession planning
- Research complex tax issues and prepare technical memoranda
- Stay current with federal, state, and local tax law changes and their impact on clients
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise and mentor junior staff members, providing guidance on technical matters and professional development
- Review and approve work product to ensure accuracy and quality standards
- Assist in staff training and knowledge sharing initiatives
- Participate in performance evaluations and hiring decisions
Business Development
- Support firm marketing efforts and client retention initiatives
- Identify opportunities for additional services within existing client relationships
- Participate in professional organizations and networking events
- Contribute to proposal preparation for prospective clients
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA license required (must be eligible for New York State licensure)
- Master's degree in Taxation preferred
Experience
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive tax experience at a public accounting firm
- Experience with complex tax matters including multi-state taxation, consolidated returns, and partnership taxation
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in tax preparation software (ProSystem fx, Lacerte, or similar)
- Advanced knowledge of federal and state tax codes
- Experience with tax research tools (RIA, CCH, BNA)
- Strong Excel skills and familiarity with accounting software systems
