Position Overview
Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Senior Tax Accountant to join their established CPA firm located in Hauppauge, Long Island. The ideal candidate will prepare complex tax returns, assist with tax planning initiatives, and mentor junior staff while serving our diverse client base of individuals, small to mid-sized businesses, and non-profit organizations throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Compliance
- Prepare and review federal, New York State, and local tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, S-corporations, and LLCs
- Handle multi-state tax compliance for clients with operations across various jurisdictions
- Prepare quarterly estimated tax calculations and extension requests
- Research and resolve tax notices and correspondence from taxing authorities
- Ensure accurate and timely filing of all tax documents
Client Services
- Maintain regular communication with clients regarding tax matters and deadlines
- Respond to client inquiries and provide explanations of tax positions and strategies
- Organize and review client-provided documentation for completeness and accuracy
- Prepare client tax organizers and year-end planning letters
- Assist with IRS and state tax examinations
Tax Planning & Research
- Identify tax planning opportunities and strategies for individual and business clients
- Conduct research on complex tax issues using professional tax resources
- Prepare technical memoranda documenting tax positions and recommendations
- Assist senior managers with entity selection and restructuring analyses
- Stay updated on current tax law changes and their client implications
Supervision & Training
- Review work prepared by staff accountants and provide constructive feedback
- Train and mentor junior team members on tax preparation techniques and client service
- Assist in developing staff technical skills and professional competencies
- Support quality control processes and firm procedures
Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate time records and project billing information
- Participate in firm training sessions and continuing education programs
- Assist with year-end tax planning client meetings
- Support firm marketing and business development activities as needed
Required Qualifications
Education & Licensing
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA license strongly preferred (or actively pursuing certification)
- Enrolled Agent (EA) designation acceptable in lieu of CPA
Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of tax preparation experience in public accounting
- Experience with individual, corporate, and partnership taxation
- Prior experience with New York State tax requirements preferred
- Experience mentoring or training junior staff a plus
Technical Proficiencies
- Proficiency in professional tax software (UltraTax, ProSystem fx, Drake, or similar)
- Experience with QuickBooks and other accounting software packages
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables and advanced formulas
- Familiarity with tax research databases (RIA, Thomson Reuters, CCH)
